College Decision Day is May 1st — More Time Than You Think!

College decision time is just around the corner! You may be surprised to learn that you have until May 1st to make your official college decision!

Seniors… congratulations on your college acceptances. Your hard work has paid off and soon you will embark on a new adventure to college, but before you celebrate there are a few things to consider BEFORE you commit to a college:

Be patient! — Do not feel pressured to “jump” at the first college acceptance letter and commit to that school. You actually usually have until May 1st to make your official college decision! The school may offer “incentives” to get you to commit early and send in a deposit. For the most part, consider it “marketing” and ignore it (unless, of course, it it is your top choice, your “dream school”)!

Evaluate Your Offers Including Financial Aid — Be sure to review your offers of admissions. Know the difference between a financial aid award letter, which is essentially “free” money versus money from loans that will have to be paid back in the future. Look at the fine print and note if the award is renewable for four years and if there is a certain GPA that needs to be maintained. In addition, weigh in such factors as Honors College, travel and other expenses that may impact your overall cost of attendance.

Visit Your Top Choices — You may want to re-visit your top choices to make sure the fit is perfect for you. You have time to make a final decision. Attend an admitted student day or overnight visit if possible. This will give you a true feel for the college environment.

Finish Strong — Make sure your last quarter senior grades are top notch. Colleges can rescind offers based on failing grades due to the true illness called “Senioritis.”

In summary, Be Proud of your remarkable accomplishments and having multiple choices for colleges! Take the time to find the “right” school for you and your family.
